2002 Virginia fun
Scale championship

21 July, 2002

The 2002 Virginia Fun Scale Championship was a fun event for all involved. The participation was down from last year's meet with only six contestants showing up. This is not to say the competition was lacking. Everyone flew very well considering the strong crosswind which blew for most of the afternoon. Four rounds were flown and the final score was not decided until the last round was flown.

Judges for the meet were Ed Silvers, Ken Combs, Clarence Taylor, and Pete Dixon. The food concession was again set up and operated by the Munday's. The burgers and hotdogs were great. Thanks a lot to everyone who assisted in any way. This was a fun event and I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

The judges set for long hours in the hot sun. Here they score Gary Barnett who is being assisted by Owen Dwire.
Jim Deutsch was flying his beautiful and very large Edge 540T which he constructed from plans. He says it is the best flying model he has every flown. It sure looked great in the air!

These are just a few of the models seen at the meet. Don Kohlman was flying his Edge 540T. Owen Dwire flew the decathlon. The two Shoestrings were not entered.
This is the Navion flown by Federico Jones and
Jim Deutsch's beautiful scratch built Edge 540T. Both models flew great. The Navion is a very seldom modeled aircraft of the fifty's era (maybe late forty's) and is a very stable flying model with a lot of dihedral.

The contestants and contest officials.

Left to right: Clarence Taylor, Don Kohlman, Jim Deutsch, Federico Jones, Gary Barrett, Pete Dixon, Ed Silvers, Jay Jennings, Owen Dwire, Joe Lupton, and Ken Combs.

Contest Director Joe Lupton presents the third place award to Don Kohlman.
Don won third by only one half point over Jay Jennings.

Joe is presenting the second place award to Gary Barnett. Gary started out slow but came on strong in the last two rounds to finish a strong second! He was flying a silver Cap!

Owen Dwire took first place with very consistent and realistic flying of his
four stroke powered Decathlon.  I don't think he ever went about half throttle
except maybe for takeoff or loops, etc. The quiet, slow flight produced
the highest realism scores of every round!  Congratulations, Owen!

This was NNPRCC's second Fun Scale contest. Last year we had eight contestants for our first meet. considering how much everyone enjoyed it, I was sure we would have at least a dozen this year. I must admit I was disappointed in our turnout. It takes as many folks to run an event for six contestants as it does for twelve or more. Everyone who attended enjoyed themselves, even those who assisted in judging , cooking, or eating the ice cream cake. What? You didn't know we were going to have that. Well, we didn't either. One of our non competing members had a birthday and I think it may have been a surprise. If you didn't come, sorry about that!

We may have another one of these fun scale events later this fall. Stay tuned.
