Ole Timer "A" Pattern Meet
26 August, 2001

Our President, Jay Jennings, decided it was time for us to get serious about flying so he organized our first Pattern contest. The Old Timer A Pattern we flew consisted of some very basic maneuvers which we all do just screwing around. They are easy until you attempt to put them together in a sequence and fly them in a precise manner. The Maneuvers were: Takeoff, Straight flight out, Procedure turn, and Straight flight back, Three loops, Three consecutive Rolls, an Immelman turn, Three turn spin, Hammer head stall, Traffic pattern approach, and landing. Additional points were awarded for landing in a 100 foot circle. The real killer for everyone was the three consecutive rolls. Try it and maintain heading and altitude. It's not as easy as it seems.

This shot shows all of the models except John Zeigler's. He was flying the first flight of the first round. From the left was Owen Dwyer's Super Stick, Joe Lupton's Killer Kaos, Don Kohlman's Ultimate Kaos, Jay Jenning's Something Extra, Bill Hamby's ?????, and Rock Miller's Something Extra. John was flying a plane called a Hurricane.

This is Mike Munday who CD'ed the meet and the field boss, daughter Chaelie, who keep everyone informed and ready to go. Nice job!

The weather was beautiful with temperatures in the low eighty's and the wind was less than ten knots from slightly across the runway. Here John Zeigler puts in his first round flight with his wife calling the maneuvers for him. The elite panel of judges sit right behind him as Rocks waits his turn in the ready box.

When the dust had settled, John Zeigler finished in third place, seen here accepting his award from Chaelie Munday.

Joe Lupton finished second and stole a hug along with his award.

Rocks Miller finished First and here is accepting his award
from Chaelie Munday.

The winners were, from right to left: First place, Bill "Rocks" Miller;  Second, Joe Lupton;  and Third, John Zeigler.

The rest of the contestants were given a handful of RC goodies, so everyone
ended up being winners. Bill Hamby can hardly hold all of his.

Joe cleans up his Killer Kaos after the days flying was finished.

This was my first attempt at any type of Pattern Event.  I think I speak  for everyone who entered that it was a real challenge and a great learning experience. Jay promises to do this again next year. The winners of these two events will have to fly a harder pattern on the third year of this event..... Guess it's time to start practicing.
