Family Day Picnic and Fun Fly

Our Family Day Picnic was held on 21 Oct.  The weather was just about perfect and many folks showed up to join in the fun.  Special thanks goes out to Jerry Winkler, our chief chef, who kept us in cheeseburgers and hot dogs; Pete Dixon who assisted Jerry; and Phil and Diane Greasley who acquired the food.  I would also like to thank everyone who brought food to share – there was more than we could eat…

I would like to share some photos taken during the event by Tracie Van Houten-Hawks.

The parking lot was full to overflowing…

The days festivities included plenty of open flying and short fun fly for our competitively minded members.  The fun fly was open to all members and we had nine contestants.  Events consisted of Two Minute Flight, Most Touch and Goes, and the dreaded Dixie Death.

I had plenty of help running the contest and would like to thank Dennis and Tracie Hawks, who ran the flight line; my dad, Ralph Dwire, who recorded the scores; and Dave Fisk, who ran the stop watch.

Our intrepid team of helpers… Yes - that is Phil Goodwin, going out to retrieve his airplane after the twirly thing on the front stopped spinning.  I am sure you’ll have it fixed for next year Phil.

The object of the Two Minute Flight was to takeoff, fly around, and land as close to two minutes as possible without the aid of any type of timing device.

Josh Hull took first place in the Two Minute Flight event with an amazing 2:00.48.  That’s right, Josh missed the two minute mark by just 0.48 seconds.  Josh also finished in third place overall.  Great flying Josh!

The next event was Most Touch and Goes in two minutes.  The competition was quite fierce.

Yours truly, Owen Dwire took first place in the Touch and Go event
with 9 goes and 8 touches (17 points total).  I also managed to
take first overall. I know - the contest was rigged…

The manly event, Dixie Death consisted of a takeoff, then 3 loops, 3 rolls, 3 spins, a full stop,
then repeat (takeoff , 3 loops, 3 rolls, 3 spins and land) all in the shortest possible time.

Phil Goodwin took first in Dixie Death with an outstanding time of 1:35.43!
Good flying Phil!  Amazingly enough we had plenty of Dixie but no Deaths during this event.

Jim Seneka had a solid day of flying and finished the contest in second place.  Nice job Jim!

The most popular aircraft for the competition were ugly sticks.

Joe Lupton brought out his ducted fan Enforcer and put on
quite a show with this very fast aircraft.

I would like to thank everyone who came out to enjoy the day.

It was great fun and I hope we’ll be able to do this again next year.  Until then,

FLY SAFE!!!
